Since then, Europeans have been paying with Euro Currency. The single currency brought negative interest rates and turbulent times for the export industry to Switzerland.
Used as book money since 1999, the Euro was introduced as cash on 1.1.2002. Politically, it was considered a symbol of unity. Economically, trade, travel, and price comparisons have become easier.

The currency symbol for the Euro is inspired by the letter epsilon in the Greek alphabet. The European currency initially enjoyed little confidence in the twelve countries. More than 27 billion banknotes and 138 billion coins are in circulation. Overall, the euro cash in circulation amounts to more than 1,460 billion Euros.
